Zebra Jasper is a variety of microcrystalline Quartz, coloured by natural mineral inclusions such as iron oxides and manganese. These minerals create its distinctive black, brown, & white banded patterns, resembling zebra stripes. Although called “Jasper,” many geologists classify Zebra Jasper as a banded Chalcedony instead. It can be found in many locations including South Africa, India, Brazil, Russia, & the USA.

This stone should not be confused with the striped stones sold as Australian Brown Zebra Jasper or Zebra Stone, found in the Kimberley Region. With natural patterns of earthy red-browns, tans, & pink creams, these minerals are in fact banded Claystone or Siltstone rather than Chalcedony-based Zebra Jasper.
