History & Origin:
Shiva Shell, also known as Pacific Cat’s Eye, is often found in shallow seabeds, primarily in regions like India, Thailand, & Indonesia. It was named after the Hindu god of transformation, Shiva, however the term Shiva 'Shell' is somewhat misleading as it isn’t actually a shell from an animal. It’s actually operculum of a sea snail, usually from the Turban Snail family (Turbo species). The operculum is like a little “door” the snail uses to seal itself inside its shell for protection. As the snail grows, the operculum becomes larger and thicker. Waves eventually detach it when the snail dies, and the ocean movement polishes it naturally, creating the smooth, glossy spiral. Oftentimes, you will notice one side is flat and white (the “eye”), and the other side has earthier colours, often a mix of browns, aqua greens, and sometimes pink or orange swirls.
