History & Origin:

Serpentine is not a single mineral, but instead a group of hydrated magnesium silicate minerals that can be found in shades of green, black & white. Some commonly recognised Serpentine minerals include Lizardite, Atlantisite, Antigorite, Chrysotile & Greenstone. Certain varieties of this mineral can be called under different names such as New “Jade” or Peace “Jade,” but aren't a type of Jade at all. Named in 1564 by Georgius Agricola, the word Serpentine comes from the Latin word "serpens", meaning "snake," given to it due to its mottled green appearance.
