History & Origin:

Despite often being called Selenite, the satin-like mineral you see pictured above is more accurately known in the geology community as Satin Spar. Satin Spar is a member of the Selenite/Gypsum family that has a fibrous form & silky appearance. Desert Rose, 'True' Selenite & Satin Spar are all composed of calcium sulfate dihydrate, however their differences lie in their crystal structure.

Gypsum holds a long history, from Egypt to Rome, this mineral was often used to create plaster for building projects. Furthermore, white Alabaster (ie. the massive form of Gypsum) was highly-admired for its use in carving statues. Some of the largest specimens of Selenite can be found in the Cave of Crystals in Naica, Mexico - with crystals raising as high up as 11 metres tall! Forming mainly in evaporite deposits, important sources of this material include Mexico, Morocco & Madagascar, & the Satin Spar variety is often found polished into shiny palm stones, cut into sticks or wands, or even shaped into mountain-like towers.

Metaphysical Properties:

Satin Spar Selenite is the perfect crystal for cleansing & recharging. It energises the body, mind & aura, allowing you to feel balanced, positive & purified. Connected to the Moon Goddess Selene, this magical mineral connects you with your inner self as well as spirit guides & angels. It is a highly intuitive crystal which is said to help develop psychic abilities & aid spiritual communication. Satin Spar Selenite promotes a calm & peaceful environment as it cleanses negativity & turns it into positive energy. It brings clarity, inner guidance & works perfectly alongside other crystals.

How to use:

Hold a piece to cleanse your aura & help you feel calm, happy, refreshed & rebalanced. Place on the body to bring healing & clear stagnation.

'True' Selenite

'True' Selenite, or just simply Selenite, is a variety of Gypsum that can be identified by its transparent, colourless appearance, often forming in flat sheets, blades or plates. It is a far less common formation of Gypsum as compared to Satin Spar, but holds a very similar, cleansing energy. The name comes from the Greek word “Selene,” meaning “moon,” in reference to its shiny, moonlight glow.
