A Herkimer Diamond is not a true diamond, but in fact a rare & valuable variety of doubly terminated Quartz found in Herkimer, New York. Estimated to be over 500 million years old, this stone was discovered in the late 1700s by workmen in Mohawk River Valley, formed within the surrounding Dolostone. These 'Diamond' Quartz crystals can be exceptionally clear, filled with rainbows, water bubbles or black Anthraxolite inclusions. They have since been found in other locations such as in Pakistan, Norway, Afghanistan & China, however quality, strength & clarity tend to differ in comparison to the New York Herkimers. When found outside of Herkimer, New York, Herkimer Diamonds are named Diamond Quartz or Pakimer Diamonds instead.
