Atacamite is a copper halide mineral that displays elongated prismatic crystals & a beautiful deep forest green colour. Named in 1801 after the Atacama Desert in Chile, where it is predominantly found, Atacamite forms in arid saline climates where copper minerals are exposed to oxidation. This mineral has also been discovered in Mexico, the United States & in South Australia, with specific deposits in Burra, Wallaroo & Moonta. It is polymorphous - meaning it shares the same chemistry but has a different crystal structure - with three other minerals; clinoatacamite, paratacamite & botallackite. It occurs alongside minerals such as cuprite, brochantite, linarite, caledonite, malachite & chrysocolla.
